Chapter History

Before Phi Sigma Sigma was founded on this campus, a group of girls who were dissatisfied with the sororities available formed their own local sorority.  They called it Tau Alpha Lambda, standing for Take A Look.  With permission of Panhel they were recognized as part of the Panhellenic system at Slippery Rock University.  Tau Alpha Lambda's colors were black and white and their mascot was the panda bear.  They began to look at national sororities and finally chose Phi Sigma Sigma.  With help from National and the Gamma Gamma chapter at Clarion, the Zeta Nu chapter of Phi Sigma Sigma was founded at Slippery Rock University on November 23, 1991.  Amy Abbey was initiated Zeta Nu #1 and was also the founding Archon for the chapter.  To hold on to part of Tau Alpha Lambda, they chose the penguin to be the local mascot (the black and white of the penguin for the colors).  The Lupus Foundation was chosen to be the local Philanthropy because one of the founding sisters was afflicted with the disease.  The Zeta Nu chapter is part of Community 4.

The History of Phi Sigma Sigma

ANTI-HAZING POLICY

All forms of hazing are prohibited.

Hazing is defined as any action taken or situation created, intentionally, whether on or off Fraternity premises that endangers the life of a new member or has the potential to cause bodily injury, that produces mental or physical discomfort, embarrassment, harassment or ridicule. Such activities and situations include creation of excessive fatigue; physical and psychological shocks; wearing, publicly, apparel which is conspicuous and not normally in good taste; engaging in public stunts and jokes; morally degrading or humiliating games and activities; late night sessions which interfere with scholastic activities; and any other activities which are not consistent with the regulations and policies of the educational institution.

Phi Sigma Sigma believes in new member education - not hazing. The objective of new member education is to develop good sisters. It should promote interest in Phi Sigma Sigma and be positive, informative and enjoyable. New member education should embody the principles of our ritual.
